Ukraine Makes More Gains After Forcing Russian Retreat in Kharkiv

Ukraine continues to make gains after forcing Russian troops to pull out of the entire region around Kharkiv, NBC News reports.

Ukraine launched a series of counteroffensives last week seeking to recapture land occupied by the Russians.

Russia scrambled its fighters to shore up forces in Southern Ukraine but the Ukrainian military appears to have caught Russian troops by surprise after targeting Kharkiv in the east.

Kharkiv is just 30 miles from the Russian border and just north of Russian-held Luhansk and Donestk.

“Skillful campaign”:

Military analysts praised the move.

“Ukrainian leaders discussed the strikes in the south much more ostentatiously, however, successfully confusing the Russians about their intentions in Kharkiv Oblast [province],” according to the Institute for the Study of War.

The group noted that Ukraine had executed a “skillful campaign” by maximizing the impact of western weapons systems to attack Russia in both Kharkiv and Kherson.

Russians retreat:

Ukrainian officials have said they have reclaimed about 1,150 square miles already this month.

Russian troops around Kharkiv have redeployed to Donetsk to “boost efforts” there instead, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov told reporters.

The UK Defense Ministry said that Ukraine had “recaptured territory at least twice the size of Greater London.”

“In the face of Ukrainian advances, Russia has likely ordered the withdrawal of its troops from the entirety of occupied Kharkiv Oblast west of the Oskil River,” the ministry said.
