I get the respect part of this equation- at least in theory. Though it's not exactly the same, if someone refused to call you by your first name when speaking to you, instead referring to you as "dick-breath," you might have reason to take offense. 

What I don't see is a way out of this current social climate, where things could become so much about taxonomical minutiae that it becomes impossible to so much as glance at another human being without offending them or their social group.
