The past few months have been eventful, to say the least, concerning guns and the nation’s divided views on them. On June 14, 2017, House Majority Whip Steve Scalise was shot in the hip by leftist nutjob James T. Hodgkinson. Then, on the night of October 1, Stephen Paddock opened fire on thousands of concert-goers, which caused nearly 60 deaths and hundreds of injuries.
Scalise sat down with Fox News’ Martha MacCallum who questioned whether or not the House Majority Whip’s stance on the Second Amendment changed due to his own experience being shot and his awareness of the tragedy in Vegas. As reported by The Hill, Scalise stated that his support for the Second Amendment has been “fortified.”
“Because first of all you’ve got to recognize that when there’s a tragedy like this, the first thing we should be thinking about is praying for the people who were injured and doing whatever we can to help them, to help law enforcement. We shouldn’t first be thinking of promoting our political agenda,” Scalise explained.
The House Majority Whip is correct. Unfortunately, as soon as a tragedy strikes, namely involving guns, Democrats seize the opportunity to promote their gun control agenda. As Scalise asserted, the focus of the nation should be on helping the people who are suffering.
Many left-wingers have made the argument that additional gun control measures will help prevent further suffering and acts of violence. However, as usual, Democrats are wrong. The majority of criminals do not order guns online with their credit cards, especially if they’re planning to shoot up a massive group of people. They often employ the plethora of illegal avenues available to obtaining guns, such as via theft or through the black market. If someone truly wants to get a gun, they’re going to do so. Liberals seem utterly unwilling and incapable of accepting this reality.
Moreover, gun control is highly ineffective and counterproductive, as are gun free zones. These are essentially open hunting grounds for ruthless criminals who want to wreak havoc without fear of being harmed themselves. Gun control only punishes the law-abiding citizens of America with the honor and decency to follow society’s rules and regulations. Law abiding Americans are the ones who should be armed, so that if another Stephen Paddock strikes, maybe just maybe, the “good guys” will stand a fighting chance of being saved.
Following Sunday night’s mass shooting in Las Vegas, Scalise issued the following public statement:
“In this tragic moment, I encourage people across America to stand together in solidarity, and to support the Las Vegas community and all of those affected, especially by giving blood and encouraging others to do the same. In the face of unspeakable evil, our whole nation must respond with countless acts of kindness, warmth and generosity.”
Scalise’s words are a very fine example of what Americans should be doing. When tragedy strikes, the people of this nation have a duty to come together for the sake of everyone. United we stand, but divided we fall. Sadly, liberal Democrats have rejected this notion and chosen to promote political agendas over human life.
While the investigation into Paddock and his motives are still ongoing, one of the most interesting elements of all is the fact that the weapon used to shoot countless people was already banned. Obviously, gun control didn’t stop Paddock from securing his weapons, nor did extensive background checks. When liberals are confronted with these facts, their only reprieve is to call for more gun control.
Unfortunately, America remains deeply divided on the issue of guns in this nation and the manner in which they should be regulated. Conservatives clearly value the importance of the Second Amendment while liberals want the law-abiding stripped of guns- yet believe those same law-abiding citizens should call people with guns (police officers) when they’re in trouble. What the Democrats are proposing makes absolutely no sense, is flagrantly contradictory, and their inability to grasp this is tragically problematic.
Not everything can be controlled or regulated despite our best intentions as Americans. If it weren’t for someone with a gun, House Majority Whip Steve Scalise might not be alive today. The truth of the matter is that guns don’t kill people, people kill people. A gun is nothing more than an inanimate object manipulated by the person holding it. Guns can be used to save lives or take them. Those who truly want guns will find a way to get them, no matter how much gun control liberals attempt to get passed.
The Second Amendment must always be upheld. It’s one of our most sacred rights as American citizens. We the people must always be able to defend ourselves against those who seek the do us harm. One of the best ways of achieving this is to always be armed.
