Former President Donald Trump called on the Republican Party to “immediately” oust Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, The Hill reports.
Trump cited an article from The Federalist about McConnell and his wife Elaine Chao’s ties to China to demand the ouster.
“Mitch McConnell is not an Opposition Leader, he is a pawn for the Democrats to get whatever they want,” Trump said in his statement. “He is afraid of them, and will not do what has to be done. A new Republican Leader in the Senate should be picked immediately!”
Trump blamed McConnell for failing to stop Democrats from passing the Inflation Reduction Act and giving the “Radical Left the Trillions and Trillions of Dollars that they constantly DEMAND.”
Trump doubled down:
The attack came just days after Trump targeted Chao on Truth Social, failing to mention that he appointed her as his Transportation Secretary. Chao served for nearly four years in Trump’s Cabinet before resigning over the deadly January 6 Capitol riot.
“Why do Republicans Senators allow a broken down hack politician, Mitch McConnell, to openly disparage hard working Republican candidates for the United States Senate,” Trump wrote. “This is such an affront to honor and to leadership. He should spend more time (and money!) helping them get elected, and less time helping his crazy wife and family get rich on China!”
Trump sore over candidate struggles:
Trump renewed his feud with McConnell this week after the Senate leader lamented the party’s lacking “candidate quality” after Trump’s picks won key primaries. Trump’s endorsees are now struggling in Senate races in Pennsylvania, Arizona, Georgia, Nevada and even Ohio.
During an event on Tuesday, McConnell was asked if he had a response to Trump’s attack on his wife.
“No,” McConnell said.
