News Hits A New Low: Ted Cruz's Twitter Porn Fiasco

The political climate just gets more and more interesting with each passing day. On Monday night, Texas Senator and former 2016 Presidential candidate Ted Cruz “liked” a pornographic post on Twitter which featured two women and one man in a, well…pornographic situation- one which starkly contrasts with the ‘family values’ image Cruz has tried to create for himself. As reported by CNN, the footage was posted on a Twitter page with the handle “Sexuall Posts” and showed a man and a woman engaging in sexual intercourse while another woman watched them from a distance and stimulated her genitals.

Following the massive internet reaction to the “liked” tweet, Senator Cruz issued a statement alleging that the footage was liked due to a “staffing issue.” Many people found it interesting that Cruz did not come out and directly deny that he liked the tweet himself.

Twitter’s reaction to the liked post was nothing short of comical. Users commented that seemingly wholesome people like Cruz are usually the ones with dirty little secrets who like the content featured on the aforementioned “Sexuall Posts” page. Other people made memes of the incident and jokingly inquired as to whether or not “Sexuall Posts” is an accurate representation of Cruz’s family values.

As noted by CNN, Cruz would do very well to clear the air and let Americans know whether or not he liked the tweet. Merely citing the incident as a “staffing issue” largely leaves the matter up to speculation. Each person is bound to arrive at a dissimilar conclusion from others and lingering uncertainty will undoubtedly remain.

If Cruz did like the tweet, it’s absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. There are plenty of people who enjoy what’s featured in the footage, to say the least. However, it would clear the air. Sure, everyone will make their jokes but at least people would know, and there wouldn’t be any lingering suspense. However, in light of the prior statements from Cruz and his spokespeople regarding this issue, it does not appear as though he will be coming out, definitively clearing the air, and letting Americans know whether he did or did not like the tweet.

There are a plethora of plausible theories surrounding the liking of this pornographic tweet. Obviously, a staffer could have accidentally liked the post and not realized it until after the internet’s response and countless memes. Another possibility is that Cruz himself liked the tweet accidentally. While these seem to be the most likely scenarios, there are always additional theories, some of which borderline delve into conspiracies. This pornographic tweet could merely be a distraction from something more prevalent, which either the deep state or the media do not want the American people to focus on.

Either way, this nation has bigger things to worry about. Whether Senator Cruz or one of his staffers liked the pornographic tweet is irrelevant, especially when taking into consideration the mounting issues America has to deal with.

The irony of a staunchly pious individual having dirty little secrets is accurate; people often try to hide or overcompensate what they are ashamed of by publically and radically advocating for its polar opposite.

Assuming that one of Cruz’s staff members is responsible for liking the pornographic tweet, it is unclear whether or not said staffer will be fired or demoted. Cruz jokingly suggested that having this incident occur during the primaries would have helped his chances in running for the Republican nomination. While liking the pornographic tweet may or may not have helped Cruz secure the GOP nomination, it definitely would have engendered some interesting press.

Despite the hilarity of the situation, staying focused on what matters is critical. Having a good laugh over this is fine, but the incident took place nearly 48 hours ago. The times for laughs, jokes, and memes are over. People need to focus on the issues and not be sidetracked by distractions and sidebars.

Regardless of why the tweet was liked, Cruz---or whoever managed his account---will undoubtedly be more cautious in the future. In the meantime, Americans need to return their focus to what really matters in this country.
