Kevin Spacey And Hypocritical Hollywood

Hollywood continues to be exposed as the predatory and disgusting cesspool that it is. Dozens of sexual assault allegations have surfaced against Harvey Weinstein, and according to The Hill, Kevin Spacey is next. Following accusations that Spacey molested actor Anthony Rapp in 1986, Spacey released the following statement, marking his official “coming out” as a gay man:

“As those closest to me know, in my life I have had relationships with both men and women. I have loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life, and I choose now to live as a gay man.”

Many people noted the timing of Spacey’s announcement and wondered why he waited until Rapp came out against him. Furthermore, at the time of the alleged abuse, Rapp was 14 while Spacey was 26.

“He picked me up like a groom picks up the bride over the threshold. But I don't, like, squirm away initially, because I'm like, 'What's going on?' And then he lays down on top of me,” Rapp details of the encounter. “He was trying to seduce me. I don't know if I would have used that language. But I was aware that he was trying to get with me sexually.”

Spacey responded by affirming zero recollection of the aforementioned accusations:

“I have a lot of respect and admiration for Anthony Rapp as an actor. I’m beyond horrified to hear his story. I honestly do not remember the encounter, it would have been over 30 years ago. But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior, and I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years.”

There is a serious problem in Hollywood, and quite frankly it’s revolting. How many more Harvey Weinsteins have been or continue to prey on innocent people and have yet to be discovered? How many more people either have been or will be molested, raped, or otherwise sexually abused all in the name of power and the ability to control another person’s career and livelihood? The sexual abusers in Hollywood ought to be ashamed of themselves, and quite frankly, the other people who have turned a blind eye and otherwise remained mute are not any better.

Furthermore, the flagrant double standards in Hollywood must be harshly and swiftly condemned. How many media and mainstream public figures have come out and boldly condemned President Trump for locker room talk that happened over a decade ago, for speech that doesn’t inflict a fraction of the damage that people like Kevin Spacey and Harvey Weinstein have? How many of these same people knowingly ignored the rampant abuse happening within their own circles? Selective outrage and double standards can no longer be tolerated. Sexual abuse is always wrong and ought to be condemned at all times, not only when it’s politically or economically convenient.

Unfortunately, the double standards in Hollywood are not limited to people like Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey. As reported by Fox News, talk show host Ellen DeGeneres spoke out against sexual harassment right before tweeting out an image of herself gaping at Katy Perry’s breasts, captioning the photograph with:

Happy birthday, @KatyPerry! It’s time to bring out the big balloons!

If a straight, conservative man tweeted out this very same thing, while gawking at Katy Perry’s breasts, countless Hollywood figures would be outraged. However, it seems to be OK since DeGeneres is a gay, liberal woman. Many of the same people who took to the streets over President Trump’s decade-old locker room talk have been shockingly silent about the rampant abuse, sexual harassment, and double standards existing in Hollywood. It must end.

Hollywood is officially at a crossroads. They have one of two options. They can either start condemning wrongdoing and abuse, regardless of who’s behind it or they can continue engaging in politically beneficial and selective outrage. Nobody can make the choice for Hollywood figures, but if they choose the latter, they will continue to lose credibility, as they should. Many of the same people who claim to be social justice warriors for women’s rights remained mute during the allegations against Harvey Weinstein. Ironically, Weinstein has been photographed as an attendee of the left wing Women’s March, which speaks volumes in and of itself.

What will they do with these latest allegations against Kevin Spacey?
