A Kansas police officer resigned Monday after he admitted that he made up a story that a McDonald’s worker wrote “fucking pig” on his coffee cup, The New York Times reports.
The Herington Police Department officer, whose name has not been disclosed, claimed that a McDonald’s worker wrote the slur on a receipt attached to his coffee cup.
The story was promoted by the department’s police chief and gained national media attention before being deleted.
Video proved cop lied:
McDonald’s turned over surveillance video showing that none of its employees wrote anything on the officer’s cup, police chief Brian Hornaday said at a news conference on Monday.
Hornaday said the 23-year-old cop admitted that he lied and claimed the incident was intended “as a joke.’
“I hope he understands the magnitude of the black eye this gives the law enforcement profession from coast to coast,” he said.
Hornaday said the cop had been on the job for just two months after five years in the Army.
Hornaday says he got fooled:
Hornaday had slammed McDonald’s over the incident.
“A Big Mac and large fries doesn’t make up for it,” Hornaday wrote on Facebook. “The U.S. veteran who continued to serve deserves much more.”
On Monday, Hornaday said he believed the officer because he expected a “uniformed, sworn officer” to tell the truth.
“The duty of every police officer is to protect and serve with the highest level of integrity and trust,” Hornaday said. “This incident has been an obvious violation of that public trust.”
He added that he does not believe the officer will be charged.
