Chelsea Handler Blames Republicans For Texas Shooting

Yesterday, liberal talk show host Chelsea Handler took to social media to express her thoughts on the horrific shooting at a Texas church:

“Innocent people go to church on Sunday to honor their God, and while doing so, get shot in killed. What country? America. Why? Republicans.”

Of course, this ignorant take and tragic politicization of such a tragedy engendered massive backlash, as Fox News reported hours ago. Many people responded to Handler’s tweet and not in the way she likely wanted. Twitter users slammed her for employing a tragedy as a tool to promote her own anti-gun agenda. She was also called a “terrible person,” a “hypocrite,” and “part of the problem.”

Despite Handler’s aversion to the GOP, Republicans had absolutely nothing to do with the shooting in Texas. 26 people lost their lives, and another 20 were gravely injured. Men, women, children, and the elderly died, but Handler is determined to get in body blows against Republicans at any time, regardless of how inappropriate it may be.

As President Trump stated, the horrific shooting in Texas is not a gun issue, it’s a mental health issue. Moreover, guns don’t kill people, people kill people. If someone truly wants to commit murder, they will find a way to do so, whether they use a gun, a machete, a truck, or other means. When faced with this fact, liberals often erroneously claim that Republicans are enabling murderers by refusing to support gun control measures. Republicans aren’t enabling murders; Republicans are simply aware enough to understand that gun control simply places law-abiding citizens in peril while enabling those who want to commit crimes. At some point, progressives are going to have to wake up to this reality. Vilifying Republicans doesn’t change facts.

Many conservatives have been highly critical of Democrats like Handler who claim to advocate for peace, love, and tolerance right before using a national tragedy to gain some political capital. Left-wingers often preach about the merits of being “stronger together,” however it appears as though this sentiment only applies to those who think like them.

One of the most disappointing things about Handler’s tweet is how greatly it contrasts with what ought to follow a mass shooting. When tragedy strikes, Americans of all backgrounds and political ideologies should come together. Sadly, recent events have shown that tragedies seemingly divide Americans and are often employed as tools for political grandstanding and bashing those who happen to see the world differently.

Like Handler, other liberal public figures have attracted criticism for mocking conservatives and other people who are choosing to pray about the unfortunate shooting which took place over the weekend. As Donald Trump Jr. stated on Twitter, making fun of praying Americans isn’t the best course of action. Invalidating prayer because the shooting occurred in a church is insensitive and mean-spirited, as is blaming Republicans.

Handler rightfully earned any current and future backlash that may come her way. Next time she decides to politicize a national tragedy all for the sake of getting a few hits in on Republicans, perhaps she ought to think of the grieving families who are dealing with the loss of their loved ones. There is a time for political grandstanding, and there’s a time to show compassion. Unfortunately, Handler has not yet learned that targeting Republicans who had absolutely nothing to do with this shooting, reflects poorly on her and not on conservatives.
