8chan Users Worried New Setup Will Download Child Porn Onto Their Computers

Users of the far-right hate repository 8chan found an alternative way to access the site after it went offline but some users are worried it may download child pornography onto their computers, The Daily Beast reports.

8chan went offline when Cloudflare announced they would stop providing DDoS protection to the site after the El Paso Walmart shooter used the forum to publish an anti-immigrant screed ahead of the attack. It was the third time a white supremacist mass killer posted a “manifesto” to the site in recent months.

After Cloudflare pulled their services, 8chan found protection in another company, Bitmitigate, but that company too soon cut ties with the forum after pressure from partners.

With the site offline, some 8chan users have set up an 8chan clone on the peer-to-peer network Zeronet, though that comes with its own new set of problems.

Users worried about new setup downloading child porn:

Unlike typical websites, the peer-to-peer model allows any 8chan user to turn their computer into a host for the site, but The Daily Beast notes that this could mean “potentially downloading and redistributing content from the 8chan Zeronet site, which hosts a board called ‘Child Porn.’”

“Say someones a f****t and uploads cp [child porn],” a user wrote on the Zeronet message board Wednesday. “If i happen to download it, it gets shared from my computer, right? And if i dont notice it bunch of people can download it from me? So im a distrubutor at that point, arent i?”

Zeronet users are likely immune but not so much the 8chan users.

“Fortunately for Zeronet users, their computers will only download and host content from pages they’ve clicked on. Unfortunately for 8chan fans, the website is home to images of gore, porn, sexualized drawings of children and sometimes illegal child pornography (which 8chan bans, in theory),” The Daily Beast explained.

“Yeah but what if i dont notice the pedo,” a Zeronet user wrote on the board. “id be storing cp on my drive, so if my computer got seized for whatever reason im fucked.”

Some users mused about deleting thousands of files after each session while others suggested that it should not be allowed to host images.

“None of the ‘just delete everything’ solutions are acceptable and thus far they seem the only way,” a user wrote. “I agree that text-only places are way of the future. I'm interested in illgal opinions, not illegal graphics.”

So far, most 8chan users have resisted using the new setup while the site seeks out another way to get back online.
