Jerry Falwell Jr. Attacks Evangelical Leader Who Criticized Conditions of Child Detention Facilities

Jerry Fallwell Jr.

Evangelical leader and unrepentant Trump supporter Jerry Falwell Jr. lashed out at an evangelical leader who criticized the appalling conditions some children being held at migrant detention centers face.

Russell Moore, a theologian who heads the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, shared a report detailing the shocking conditions of one detention center in Texas and urged for children to be treated with “dignity and compassion,” prompting Falwell’s ire.

“The reports of the conditions for migrant children at the border should shock all of our consciences,” Moore wrote. “Those created in the image of God should be treated with dignity and compassion, especially those seeking refuge from violence back home. We can do better than this.”

Falwell, the president of the religious Liberty University, bizarrely attacked Moore for suggesting that children be treated compassionately.

“Who are you @drmoore?” Falwell wrote. “Have you ever made a payroll? Have you ever built an organization of any type from scratch? What gives you authority to speak on any issue? I’m being serious. You’re nothing but an employee- a bureaucrat.”

Falwell ripped for Trump cronyism after ‘racy photos’ report:

Falwell has been an avowed Trump supporter ever since longtime former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen helped him get rid of racy photographs that Cohen said in a taped conversation would typically be kept “between husband and wife,” Reuters reported. According to the report, Falwell endorsed Trump after Cohen “destroyed” the photos.

Twitter users called out Falwell, wondering, what would Jesus do?

“Imagine if a novelist wrote a satire where the son of Jerry Falwell Jr. had some sexual escapades involving his wife as well as a pool boy, then turned to a crooked lawyer of Trump for assistance, and ended up convincing evangelical Christians to vote for Trump. ‘Over the top!’” one user quipped.

“Jesus should sue Jerry Falwell Jr. for defamation,” wrote New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristoff.

“There is no one in public religious life who to me acts less like a Christian leader than Jerry Falwell Jr,” another user wrote. “And Rev Falwell you didn’t ‘build an organization from scratch’....your Father did. You inherited it and were born on 3rd base thinking you hit a Triple.”

Migrant children held in horrific conditions:

The AP report that Moore shared revealed shocking conditions at the Border Patrol station in Clint, Texas, where more than 300 children were held.

Attorneys “described a 4-year-old with matted hair who had gone without a shower for days, and hungry, inconsolable children struggling to soothe one another. Some had been locked for three weeks inside the facility, where 15 children were sick with the flu and another 10 were in medical quarantine,” the AP reported.

Border Patrol said in a statement, “Our short-term holding facilities were not designed to hold vulnerable populations and we urgently need additional humanitarian funding to manage this crisis.”
