During Sunday’s 2018 Golden Globe Awards, television star Oprah Winfrey delivered a passionate speech regarding sexual assault and the importance of combating it. She mentioned the importance of women being heard and believed when they come forth with reports. Many Americans lauded Winfrey’s speech as inspirational and even suggested that she should run for President in 2020.
Among the admirers of Winfrey’s speech was First Daughter Ivanka Trump. The President’s eldest daughter tweeted out the following supportive message:
“Just saw @Oprah's empowering & inspiring speech at last night’s #GoldenGlobes. Let’s all come together, women & men, & say #TIMESUP! #United”
However, many Americans have criticized Ivanka’s praise as hypocritical. Left-leaning Americans have referred to the First Daughter as clueless, noting the fact that President Trump has been accused of sexual misconduct. Some conservative critics claimed that Ivanka was attempting to “play both sides of the field” and win the favor of liberals and progressives.
One of the First Daughter’s strongest and most outspoken critics was The View’s Meghan McCain, daughter of John McCain. Her remarks read as follows:
“Whether she likes it or not, you are attached, you are an entity, you’re no longer one person. The idea that you get to be separate, especially when you are in the White House, working in the White House, in the West Wing, is delusional… You’re not separate, you’re never gonna be detached from what’s happening in the White House right now.”
McCain then proceeded to make predictions about the future.
“This could be a woman who’s going to be running against your dad, you’re going to be in the nitty-gritty of another campaign, and you’re already supporting this? It’s just stupid politics on top of everything else.”
What McCain and other critics of the First Daughter don’t seem to understand is that not every single political statement is rooted in some deep, dark conspiracy. Ivanka enjoyed Oprah’s speech and sometimes, it really is as simple as that. The First Daughter has the right to her own opinions and the right to like and dislike whatever she chooses.
As the political world has intensified, so has the existence of petty politics. This “us versus them” mentality has been taken to the extreme lately. Claiming that Ivanka Trump is disallowed from liking Oprah Winfrey’s Golden Globe Awards speech due to her relation to and work with President Trump is outrageous.
It’s a stupid form of ideological purity testing that reduces complex people and opinions down to one-dimensional characters. This is not how people work, and it’s definitely not how the world works - no one is a monolith. Many of the First Daughter’s detractors should ask themselves if they’re slamming her for lauding Oprah’s speech or for other reasons. The attacks against Ivanka seem to be personal and pettily vicious, rather than grounded in genuine concern about her politics.
The criticism against the First Daughter also goes to show that sexual assault has unfortunately been politicized in America. Oprah’s condemnation of sexual assault should be something that all people can agree on, regardless of politics. Why are liberal celebrities allowed to like the speech, while Ivanka isn’t? The same people sending out “Me Too” tweets and highlighting the merits of bringing awareness to sexual misconduct are trashing the First Daughter for supporting a speech which brought attention to sexual assault. When and where do the hypocrisy and double standards end?
Ultimately, America has got to do better. People, regardless of their political affiliations, should not be slammed for supporting the fight against sexual assault. The tribalism has got to come to an end. Many of Ivanka’s critics have lauded the importance of “standing together.” They can now put their money where their mouths are by “standing with” people who oppose sexual misconduct, instead of berating them over their politics or their fathers.
