Top House Conservatives Are Calling On Sessions To Resign

With the mounting intensity of the current political climate comes conservative calls for Attorney General Jeff Sessions to resign. As reported by The Hill, House conservative members have lost faith in Sessions and feel as though he is failing to do his job. Thus far, Republicans Jim Jordan and Mark Meadows have affirmed in an opinion piece for the Washington Examiner that the time has come for a new Attorney General. A notable excerpt reads as follows:

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has recused himself from the Russia investigation, but it would appear he has no control at all of the premier law enforcement agency in the world. It is time for Sessions to start managing in a spirit of transparency to bring all of this improper behavior to light and stop further violations. If Sessions can't address this issue immediately, then we have one final question needing an answer: When is it time for a new attorney general?”

Jordan and Meadows are not the first conservatives to question the Attorney General or his fitness to serve in government. Many Americans have expressed concerns that Sessions is not taking care of business or tackling the right issues.

Sessions also caught heat from President Trump last March when he recused himself from the Russia investigation. According to the Attorney General, his decision to depart from the case was prompted by consultations with Justice Department officials who recommended that Sessions have no involvement with the probe. However, this did not sit well with the president or the majority of his supporters.

As a matter of fact, President Trump was seemingly so averse to Sessions’ recusal that he directed White House counsel Don McGahn to halt the Attorney General’s removal from the Russia investigation, according to new reports.

Sessions’ recusal from the Russia investigation is not the only example of inaction which has engendered the ire of many conservatives and Trump supporters. During then-candidate Trump’s campaign, he vowed to have a special investigator look into the nefarious misdeeds of Hillary Clinton. A few months ago, when the President’s supporters chanted “lock her up,” at a rally, he said, “You’ll have to ask Jeff Sessions about that.”

Where is Jeff Sessions in all of this? What is his doing? These are questions that many Americans have and it’s why Jordan and Meadows are now calling for the Attorney General’s resignation. The truth of the matter is that Sessions was hired by the President to handle legal affairs. This is Sessions’ job by definition, and if he is unable to meet the demands of the job, he should honorably pass along the torch to someone who can.

The Attorney General’s inaction has prompted many conservatives to question whether or not Sessions is being blackmailed. Rumors and conspiracy theories regarding the “deep state” have existed for quite some time, and many Americans are beginning to wonder whether or not Sessions’ strings are being pulled by someone behind the scenes.

While conservative are theorizing about the deep state’s potential hold over the Attorney General, liberals have taken a considerably different position regarding Sessions’ recusal from the Russia probe. Left-leaning Americans have cited Sessions’ decision to remove himself from the investigation as a sign that the Trump family and administration did collude with Russia during the 2016 Presidential election. Many of these theories have been promoted on social media. Regardless of the reasoning behind Sessions’ recusal, the Russia probe has gone on for months, and so far, not a shred of concrete evidence has surfaced to prove that any Russia collusion took place.

However, despite Jordan and Meadow’s calls for the Attorney General to resign, it appears as though Sessions might be working from behind the scenes. Fox News recently reported that the Justice Department is currently investigating the Clinton Foundation for alleged “pay to play” politics during Hillary Clinton’s time as Secretary of State.

If Sessions is, in fact, working behind the scenes, he is doing a very good job of it. Perhaps holding back on calling for the resignation of Sessions would be helpful at this time. Very soon, Americans will know whether or not the Attorney General has been quietly making moves or simply doing nothing at all. For now, reserving judgment is the best and wisest course of action.
